At McFarland Construction, collaboration is one of our core values. We know that collaboration begins internally by building the right team and workplace culture. Our employees are the building blocks of our team and every one of them has a story to tell. Up next under our Employee Spotlight is Michelle, our Marketing Manager. When Michelle isn’t spearheading a new marketing campaign or coming up with creative ways to share McFarland Construction’s story, she loves to cook and spend time with her family. Learn more about Michelle from our recent interview with her:

How many years have you been in Marketing?

I’ve been in marketing for about ten years. I got my bachelor’s degree at UF in Finance and afterwards I decided that wasn’t for me, so I pursued marketing and got my masters from the University of South Florida. My first job in marketing was in Sarasota, FL at a structural engineering firm.

What do you enjoy most about your position?

I enjoy that you’re always busy and always have something to do. I also enjoy the fact that I get to dip into all aspects of marketing. The tasks I complete on a daily basis cover a wide variety of things. I love being creative and enjoy graphic design and content development. I also enjoy being able to find new ways to tell the McFarland story.

What do you like most about the construction industry?

I think that the construction industry is fun because it’s always changing. We always have different kinds of projects in progress with many different clients. I like being able to go out on site and see the projects come to life and see the final product. It is cool to be able to be part of building the community.

Can you describe a typical day for you?

There isn’t really a typical day for me. One day I may be focusing on a proposal and the next day I could be focusing on something like site signage or something that is more on the public relations side. Every day is truly different and I’m always getting pulled in different directions. I keep a list of things to do but my plan for the day usually ends up changing.

What motivates you?

In marketing, you have an opportunity to really make a difference in the business. You get to share the growth and successes of the company, so I’m motivated by being able to contribute to the growth of McFarland.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like to spend time with my kids and my family. My 5-year-old daughter and almost 3-year-old son always keep me busy. I spend a lot of time with my extended family since we mostly all live in Charlotte. I also Iove to cook. I’m usually experimenting with new recipes and making new things for my family.

How long have you lived in Charlotte?

I’ve been in Charlotte for almost 6 years. I moved here because my family had all slowly migrated from Florida to Charlotte – like my cousin, aunt, uncle, mom, dad, siblings etc. I then found out I was pregnant with my daughter and decided it would be really important to be around family. I had also been living in the same area my whole life, so it was time for something different.

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?

Most people don’t know that I did powerlifting both in high school and in college. I competed in bench press, squats, and dead lifts. I was captain of the weightlifting team in high school, and I was the only female on the power lifting team in at the University of Florida.

What do you like most about working at McFarland?

Definitely the people and the culture. I love everyone that I work with, and I think that everyone gets along really well. There is a lot of mutual respect, and all opinions are valued. I am constantly asked for my ideas, and they are truly taken to heart by my entire team. All employees are valued on a personal level.
