Meet Our McFarland Community: Cynthia – Finance Manager

How long have you been a Finance Manager?

Well, I was officially given my title around November of last year. Prior to that, I was the office manager. It was really just a title change and I’ve been doing this job for almost six years.

What do you enjoy the most about your position?

The variety of it. I’m definitely the jack of all trades in our office, so I get to touch a little bit of everything. No two days are the same.

Can you describe a typical day for you?

Checking my emails, entering invoices, responding to emails, billing our clients and trade partners, booking travel. I am always spread over a thousand places, so I never really have a typical day, but that’s what I love about it.

What motivates you?

Loving what I do. I think that is the biggest part of it. I truly love what I do and am a geek about accounting sometimes. I feel grateful that I went to UNC Charlotte and got a finance degree that I am actually using. A lot of people can’t say that.

How long have you been in the Charlotte area?

After graduating from UNCC, I left and went to Raleigh for a little while and have been back in Charlotte for the past 14 years, so 21 years in the area total. I came back before I had my daughter, Dezare, who is now 14. I was doing collections at a roofing company in Raleigh and was relocated to Charlotte to be an office manager. That job helped me learn to build relationships with people.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Definitely hanging out with my family and shopping. We have a dog, so we love going to the dog park. Her name is Cookie and we’ve had her since she was a puppy. She is so lovable and is my baby. I treat her better than any dog I’ve ever had. Working from home during COVID helped us to really bond.  I also love to read and watch crime dramas. I could watch Discovery Channel all day and never get tired of the crime shows.

What’s something you’re passionate about?

The work I do with NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction). I have been a member for about five years. We do a lot of volunteer work. We just finished our second Make-a-Wish project, and it’s very special to be a part of. We do a lot of networking activities together and I enjoy spending time with those ladies.

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?

I was hit by a car when I was 9 and was in a full leg cast for several months. I was born in New York City and then moved out to the country in Laurinburg with my family. It’s ironic because I was hit by a car out in the country instead of New York!

I heard you like to travel. Where is your favorite place you’ve ever traveled?

Aruba! I recently went for my birthday. It was a postponed 40th birthday trip and it was so fabulous. Because of COVID there were no buffets, so we got to order everything. We had lobster tails and shrimp. All the food was fantastic. It was so relaxing, and the resort was perfect. They call it the Happy Island and it’s really true.

What do you like most about working at McFarland?

I like that it was a small company when I started. Being able to watch it grow has been great. I’ve always wanted to work at a company where the boss knows my name. I love the family atmosphere we have here and the fact that I am trusted completely to do my job. The people are all so dedicated and that makes work life a lot better. The flexibility and work / life balance is also great. To see it grow from where we started to where we are now has been amazing. I am so proud to be a part of this organization.
