MEET OUR MCFARLAND COMMUNITY: MATT – GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT

At McFarland Construction, collaboration is one of our core values. We know that collaboration begins internally by building the right team and workplace culture. Our employees are the building blocks of our team and every one of them has a story to tell. Up next under our Employee Spotlight is Matt, our General Superintendent. When Matt isn’t providing oversight and support to all our field teams, he enjoys hiking and camping with his family. Learn more about Matt from our recent interview with him:

How long have you been in the construction industry?

I have been in the industry for 28 years. I began my career working on foundations and vertical concrete formwork in Atlanta, Georgia, but I’ve always liked working with my hands. I was building treehouses when I was 8 years old, so it’s always been a part of my life.

After my first job in Atlanta, I was hired as a carpenter and left that same company as an assistant superintendent to pursue a superintendent role at another general contractor. Since 2001, I have worked as a superintendent and senior superintendent, up until my promotion with McFarland Construction to general superintendent.

How long have you been at McFarland?

I have been with McFarland for a little over a year.

What do you like most about the industry?

The fact that I get to learn something new every single day, whether it’s about the people I work with, or building new systems and the challenges of putting those systems together to complete a project.

What brought you to the Charlotte area?

I’ve actually lived in Asheboro, North Carolina since 1994, but have worked in the Charlotte area for two years, and hopefully will for the next 15 years!

I grew up in Montana, but my family moved to Asheboro in 1984. I spent four years in the US Army in the 10th Mountain Division, based out of Fort Drum in New York. After my time in the service, I ended up in Atlanta where I was introduced to the construction industry.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

When it isn’t my son’s wrestling season and I’m attending his matches and tournaments, I like to volunteer for a local organization called the Uwharrie Trailblazers. They maintain trails along the Uwharrie Trail. I enjoy hiking, camping, and hunting, and I do all these things with my family. I have a wife and two teenagers.

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?

In 1991, after my time in the US Army was over, I walked across the state of North Carolina down to Atlanta with the intent of walking across the country. However, one thing led to another, and I ended up staying in Atlanta for four years. Though I definitely would like to do the Appalachian Trail from start to finish within the next 10 years.

What do you like most about working at McFarland?

The culture, the teamwork, and the can-do spirit that is instilled in each individual that makes up our team. I’m inspired by how the future looks for McFarland and I’m very excited to be a part of it.
