At McFarland Construction, collaboration is one of our core values. We know that collaboration begins internally by building the right team and workplace culture. Our employees are the building blocks and lucky for us, they all have a great story to tell. Each month we’ll introduce you to someone from our McFarland Community. This month we’re highlighting Ashar, one of our Site Superintendents. He enjoys his role because he likes working as part of a team and enjoys being challenged. In his spare time you might find him playing hockey or hiking Grandfather Mountain or Mount Mitchell. Fun fact, he’s a dual citizen so he has two passports. Hopefully he can use them to travel somewhere soon! Learn more about Ashar from our latest interview with him:
How long have you been in the construction industry?
Since I was 15 years old so about 16 years now, full-time
What got you into construction?
I grew up working for my dad with his companies doing construction as a kid and went straight into in high school.
What type of company did your dad own?
He had companies that owned construction companies. We worked on thousands of condo units each year in DC doing carpentry work like doors, trims, cabinets.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I really enjoy the team-building. Working with people is one of the bigger aspects of being successful and I really enjoy that part. I also like challenges and being in hard situations then being able to go in and turn things around.
Do you have a favorite project that you’ve worked on?
The Heart Vascular Institute was really cool. It was a great team, a great spot, and a really cool building as far as what it was going to be used for, Oncology and Heart & Vascular care so it was really a cool project. It was a great design too. You don’t get a lot of jobs like that.
Where are you from originally?
I’m from New England originally. I grew up in Vermont until I was 8 then moved to Boston, Upstate New York, then DC when I was 13 and I lived there ever since until I moved to Charlotte 4 years ago.
Why did you decide to move to Charlotte?
I actually came to Shelby for work. I did a big energy project there. Then I decided to stay here and put my resume on Indeed and got a call from McFarland a couple hours later which was pretty cool.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like playing hockey. I do a lot of hiking. I like going to Grandfather Mountain and Mitchell is a favorite. I definitely like doing outdoors stuff. I also like to go bar hopping. I don’t know if bar hopping qualifies as an outdoor activity but it’s partially outdoors.
What is something that most people don’t know about you?
I’m a dual citizen – Canadian and American. I was born in Canada and lived there for the first six months of my life so I have two passports.
What do you like most about working for McFarland?
I like the leadership team, Tino, Gene, Ben, Jamario. They were the first people I met with the company and I thought it would be cool to work with them. I like that we have a lot of exposure to different teams and projects. Working on the Joint Venture projects is cool because I get to go from one really big project to the next. You don’t always get the opportunity to work on projects like that.
